Interstellar Dust Grains

This review surveys the observed properties of interstellar dust grains: the wavelength-dependent extinction of starlight, including absorption features, from UV to infrared; optical luminescence; infrared emission; microwave emission; optical, UV, and X-ray scattering by dust; and polarization of starlight and of infrared emission. The relationship between presolar grains in meteorites and the...

Cosmic dust grains strike again

A detailed simulation of air showers produced by dust grains has been performed by means of the aires Monte Carlo code with the aim of comparing with experimental data. Our analysis indicates that extensive dust grain air showers must yet be regarded as highly speculative but they cannot be completely ruled out. PACS number(s): 98.70.Sa, 98.70.-f

Temperature fluctuations of interstellar dust grains

The temperatures of interstellar dust grains are analyzed using stochastic simulations, taking into account the grain composition and size and the discreteness of the photon flux. Grains of radii smaller than about 0.02 μm are found to exhibit large temperature fluctuations with narrow spikes following the absorption of UV photons. The temperatures of such grains may rise by a few × 10 K for ve...

Solar wind and motion of dust grains

Action of solar wind on arbitrarily shaped interplanetary dust particle is investigated. The final relativistically covariant equation of motion of the particle contains both orbital evolution and change of particle’s mass. Non-radial solar wind velocity vector is also included. The covariant equation of motion reduces to the Poynting-Robertson effect in the limiting case when spherical particl...

Diffuse Galactic Emission from Spinning Dust Grains

Spinning interstellar dust grains produce detectable rotational emission in the 10-100 GHz frequency range. We calculate the emission spectrum, and show that this emission can account for the " anomalous " Galactic background component which correlates with 100 µm thermal emission from dust. Implications for cosmic background studies are discussed.
